NDP Transportation Critic calls for gas regulation in Ontario

Toronto, Ontario – NDP Transportation Critic Gilles Bisson has asked Ontario Liberal premier Dalton McGuinty to regulate fuel prices to protect consumers.

“Motorists are getting hosed at the pumps and whacked in their wallets,” Bisson said. “This is Dalton McGuinty’s gas price one-two punch.”

A recent Ipsos-Reid poll revealed that more than 70 per cent of Ontarians surveyed agreed that “gasoline prices should be directly regulated by the government to protect consumers from unfair pricing.” Bisson said the McGuinty Liberals should move quickly to implement regulation, which is already in effect in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Quebec. The most common approach to regulation holds prices steady over two-week intervals, and then notifies consumers in advance when prices are about to change.

Bisson has launched a Web site, www.ontariondp.com/pumpshock, that gives motorists the chance to tell their stories or sign an online petition.
