National, Alamo rental cars to come with navigation systems
New Orleans, Louisiana – Motorola has teamed up with Vanguard Car Rental USA Inc., the operator of National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car, to announce Vanguard’s “Navigation Station” portable GPS navigation system.
The system, based on Motorola’s VIAMOTO technology, will provide rental car customers with spoken turn-by-turn directions, and point-of-interest information such as hotels and restaurants via a Motorola mobile device.
The driver can punch in location information or connect with the call centre and give the operator a destination address or point of interest. A route is then calculated and downloaded to the mobile phone. As soon as the car begins moving, the turn-by-turn directions are communicated aloud through the handset’s speakerphone. If the driver makes a wrong turn, the route is recalculated.
Location-based services are increasingly in demand by consumers, according to industry analyst reports.
Navigation System is now available at select rental locations in major cities, including Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. It will be available in more than 50 cities across the U.S. within the next four months. The service adds US$9.99 per day to the cost of the rental.
