Paris, France – The Intermat innovation commission in Paris has awarded the Michelin Tweel with a 2006 Gold Medal for Innovation. The Tweel is a single non-pneumatic tire and wheel combination, made up of a rubber tread bonded to the hub by flexible spokes; the spokes are fused with a deformable wheel that absorbs shock and easily rebounds.
The jury ranked innovations according to technical design and technologies, economy, quality of work, ease of use, comfort, safety, and environmental friendliness. It is the third international award for the Tweel, which was also selected by Time Magazine as one of the “Most Amazing Inventions of 2005”, and Popular Science’s “Best of What’s New”.
