Michelin CEO killed in boating accident

Paris, France – Edouard Michelin, CEO of the global tire firm, drowned in a boating accident last Friday; his body was found off the coast of Brittany hours after he set out on a fishing expedition.

The 43-year-old Michelin was the great-grandson of the company’s founder, also named Edouard Michelin; he joined the company in 1985 and was appointed CEO in 1999. His appointment was marked by controversy when he cut the company’s European workforce by ten per cent, but the firm bounced back to an 18 per cent increase in profits by 2002. Michelin is survived by his wife and six children; as per company bylaws, his position has been filled by Michel Rollier, Managing Partner of the Michelin Group.
