Michelin awarded U.S. military contract

Greenville, South Carolina – The U.S. military has selected Michelin to manage its military tire program; the company is already the majority supplier of U.S. Army tactical tires.

The Defense Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio has awarded Michelin Americas Truck Tires a ten-year, US$1.7 billion contract to provide ground tires for every type of wheeled vehicle for all military branches around the world. The contract is in addition to a US$700 million-plus contract recently awarded to Michelin for military aircraft tires.

The company recently invested US$16 million to increase military tire production to meet the surge in demand related to operations in Iraq. It will work with Science Applications International Corp. to manage the wholesale supply, storage and distribution functions for all ground tires used by the military.
