Michelin announces US$350 million investment in South Carolina plants

Greenville, South Carolina – Michelin North America is investing US$350 million to improve and expand each of its major manufacturing facilities in South Carolina over the next four years. The latest investment will upgrade facilities in Anderson, Greenville, Lexington and Spartanburg counties, and will add approximately 100 new manufacturing jobs to the current 7,850 employees in South Carolina.

“With increasing competition from Asian imports and high raw material costs, Michelin will remain competitive in North America by continuing to manufacture tires in more efficient operations with skilled professional employees,” says Jim Micali, chairman and president, Michelin North America Inc.

Among the upgrades are increased productions of semi-finished materials to support tire manufacturing facilities around North America; increased earthmover tire production; and increased production of X One wide single and military tire production. The investments will be accomplished between now and the end of 2011. Michelin established its first modern plant in the U.S. in Greenville in 1975.
