Mercedes to launch mild hybrid in 2008

Stuttgart, Germany – DaimlerChrysler will bring a Mercedes-Benz gasoline/electric hybrid to market by 2008, according to a report by the Green Car Congress. The report quotes DaimlerChrysler board member Dr. Thomas Weber.

Weber said the company will introduce an S-Class mild hybrid, and that further mild hybrids are in development for later years. The company introduced both gasoline and diesel hybrid concept cars based on the S-Class at last year’s Frankfurt auto show. The concept car’s system uses a 3.5-litre V6 with a six kW electric motor installed between the engine and torque converter, which functions as a starter or generator and provides a power boost when necessarily; the concept car uses 8.3 L/100 km of fuel.
