Mercedes Car Group to reduce workforce by 8,500

Stuttgart, Germany – DaimlerChrysler AG has announced that under its voluntary personnel-reduction program at the Mercedes Car Group, approximately 5,000 employees had signed retirement contracts or had already left the company by the end of 2005. Some 1,100 of the contracts are for early retirement.

The figure means that around 60 per cent of the twelve-month target has been achieved, three months after starting the voluntary program. The goal is to reduce Mercedes’ workforce by 8,500 jobs by the end of September 2006.
