Stuttgart, Germany – Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will offer the SLR McLaren sports car in roadster configuration. Made of a newly-developed material, the roof automatically opens and closes in less than ten seconds.
Like the coupe, the SLR McLaren roadster will be made of carbon fibre with two aluminum engine frames, and use an AMG V8 engine delivering 626 hp, with a top speed of 332 km/h. It will also use gull-wing doors.
The roof material, available in three colours, guarantees complete suitability for use in all weather and allows the roadster to reach the same speeds as the coupe. Mercedes says that thanks to the vehicle’s aero-acoustics, conversation is still possible at speeds well over 200 km/h. Built at McLaren’s Formula 1 factory in Woking, England, the roadster will be available in September, 2007.
