Richmond Hill, Ontario – The Mazda3 and the Ford F-Series pickup were the top-selling car and light truck in Canada in January, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers. A total of 35,696 cars and 45,885 light trucks were sold in January 2010.
DesRosiers warned to be careful not to read too much into one month, “and especially January where a lot of strange things can happen in the auto markets due to year-end issues,” he said. “The market is swinging back to light trucks in a very big way. This was developing all last year as well, so January is a continuation of this trend.”
DesRosiers also noted that the market is turning back to larger vehicles, with entry-level sales down by 1.4 per cent in January in a market that was up 6.2 per cent. The large/luxury/sport segments were up 25.3 per cent, and vehicles primarily for commercial use were up by 23.9 per cent.
In order, the top ten cars in January 2010 were the Mazda3, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Chevrolet Impala, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Altima, Toyota Yaris, Ford Focus, and Volkswagen Golf.
In order, the top ten light trucks in January 2010 were the Ford F-Series, Dodge Caravan, Dodge Ram, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Escape, Hyundai Santa Fe, Dodge Journey, Chevrolet Equinox, and Honda CR-V.
