Hiroshima, Japan – Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that it built the one millionth Mazda3 at its Hofu Plant No. 1 in Japan at the end of August 2006. The car, known as the Axela in Japan, started production at the end of June 2003, and establishes a new record for the fastest time to produce one million units of a Mazda vehicle.
The Mazda3 was named Canadian Car of the Year in 2004, and won second in the 2004 European Car of the Year, the highest-ranking Japanese model that year. In total, it has won 67 automotive awards to date.
Earlier this year, the company announced the Mazdaspeed3 high-performance version; as of the end of August 2006, Mazda has received 838 orders in three months.
