Hiroshima, Japan – Mazda has announced that its new compact SUV will be named the CX-5.

The new model is the production version derived from the Minagi concept car, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011 and will be shown at the New York International Auto Show that opens to the public later this week.

The CX-5 will be the first production vehicle to incorporate Mazda’s new “Kodo – Soul of Motion” design theme, debuted on the Shinari concept car, along with the full range of SKYACTIV fuel-efficient technologies, including engines, transmissions, body and chassis.

The CX-5 will join Mazda’s global lineup in 2012 along with the larger CX-7 and CX-9 models. It will make its international debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
