Seoul, South Korea – Two drivers are attempting a Guinness world record for the lowest fuel consumption in a hybrid car by driving a 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid through 48 U.S. states.

Wayne Gerdes and Chris Bernius will drive 12,874 kilometres in the factory-standard four-door sedan. They left Kia’s manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia on August 26 and will travel clockwise through the country, finishing in South Carolina 16 days later on September 10.

Kia’s Facebook page will include photos, video footage and a blog that will be updated daily.
