John Lennon’s 1956 Austin to be auctioned
Las Vegas, Nevada – A 1956 Austin Princess belonging to John Lennon, along with its signed registration, is expected to fetch up to US$200,000 in an online auction.
The sale, available at www.juliensauctions.com, will be broadcast from the Aladdin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on October 29. A portion of the sale proceeds will benefit Amnesty International USA.
Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono purchased the 1956 Austin, a modified hearse, on August 26, 1971. It was used in “Imagine”, a film created to promote the album of the same name, and is seen in the opening scene when Lennon and Ono walk in the grounds of their British home, shortly before they moved to New York.
Additional Lennon items include the white suit he wore on the cover of “Abbey Road”, estimated at US$150,000, and the embroidered jacket he wore in “Imagine”, estimated at US$30,000. Other items in the auction include a lock used by Houdini in his act, Marilyn Monroe’s appointment and address books, and a headdress worn by Elizabeth Taylor in the movie “Cleopatra”.
