Jeep Grand Cherokee sales top three million North America
Auburn Hills, Michigan – The Jeep Grand Cherokee, which debuted by being driven through a glass wall at the 1992 Detroit Auto Show, topped sales of three million units in North America in March. Worldwide, nearly 3.5 million have been sold.
“The first Jeep Grand Cherokee created the luxury sport-utility market,” said Jeff Bell, Vice President of Jeep. “Since then, many strong competitors have intensified the full size SUV market. Yet none have matched Grand Cherokee’s combination of legendary Jeep 4×4 capability, on-road refinement, technological innovations and safety features.”
The first Jeep Grand Cherokee, introduced as a 1993 model, was the first SUV to be equipped with a driver’s side air bag. The second generation, a 1999 model, featured the new Quad-Drive transfer case, incorporating a progressive, speed-sensing torque transfer coupling. The all-new 2005 model was unveiled last year.
