Saint John, New Brunswick – The Saint John YMCA in New Brunswick has received a new, customized 20-passenger mini-bus donated by Irving Oil.

The bus will help to meet the Y’s challenges of the growing transportation needs of its program members.

“We transport nearly 10,000 children a year throughout Saint John,” said Shilo Boucher, acting CEO of the Saint John Y. “Our previous van was not keeping up with the demand and we weren’t sure how we were going to meet this growing need. Then Irving Oil stepped in and made it happen. We’re so appreciative of this significant gift, one of the largest corporate donations outside of a capital campaign, and what it will mean to the community.”

Boucher said that the Y’s programs are open to everyone in the community, but transportation is a barrier to participants at or below the poverty line.

During the summer, the bus will be used to transport children to day camps and residential camps. Throughout the school year, the Y does three daily runs to various local schools, but service to some had to be discontinued due to the limited space of the previous vehicle. The new bus will begin operations immediately.
