Hyundai becomes the latest major manufacturer to enter the auto industry’s latest craze of building small, pint-sized SUVs. Along with the announcement of a global roll-out of an all-new sub-compact SUV for the second half of 2015, comes the release of the forthcoming baby-SUV’s name: Creta.
The Creta moniker derives primarily from the Greek isle of Crete. Crete is the largest of the Greek isles and in ancient times, was the focal point for the world’s trade and culture, connecting Europe, Asia and Africa. Creta is a combination of Crete and ‘creative’, according to Hyundai.
The reference to Crete also makes sense as it follows the Hyundai trend of naming their utility vehicles after places in the world, like the current Tucson and Santa Fe.
Due to hit the market in the second half of 2015, beginning in India, the Creta will be doing battle with the Chevrolet Trax, Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX-3, Nissan Juke, Honda HR-V, Mitsubishi RVR, and the Mini Countryman All4. We’ve just received word from Hyundai Canada that we will not be seeing the Creta land in the Great White North. Oh well, you’ll just have to make do with all the other baby-SUVs we do have available.
No other details have been released as of yet.
