Toronto, Ontario – Honda Canada will voluntarily recall 1,002 Acura RL models and 30,501 Honda Odyssey minivans to replace a seal in the master cylinder that could potentially leak brake fluid.
The recall affects certain 2005-2007 Acura RL models, and 2005 to early 2007 Honda Odyssey minivans. The company said there have been no crashes or injuries reported in Canada related to the condition.
Honda said it is possible for a seal in the brake master cylinder to fail if Honda Genuine DOT3 brake fluid, installed at the factory, is replaced with certain aftermarket brake fluids with reduced lubrication properties, followed by a manual brake bleed with full and rapid stroke of the brake pedal. This could cause the seal to twist within its retention groove, which could then leak a small amount of brake fluid when the vehicle is used. The leak would cause the low brake fluid warning lamp to illuminate, and subsequent failure to repair the master cylinder seal would eventually result in a soft or spongy brake pedal and the possible loss of one of the two hydraulic braking circuits.
The condition will always cause the low brake fluid light to illuminate. If any of the malfunction indicators are illuminated, owners should take the vehicle to a dealer for immediate repair.
Honda Canada will begin to notify owners of affected vehicles by mail within this or next month. Dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge using a revised design of the brake master cylinder seal. Owners with questions can contact a dealer or call customer relations at 1-888-946-6329.
