Tokyo, Japan – Honda has reached a cumulative worldwide hybrid sales total of more than 800,000 vehicles as of the end of 2011.
The milestone was reached 12 years and two months after the company sold its first-generation Insight in Japan in 1999.
The company followed it with the Civic Hybrid and Accord Hybrid. Following the introduction of the second-generation Insight in 2009, Honda has introduced a total of six new hybrid models in the last three years. Its annual worldwide hybrid sales for 2011 reached approximately 200,000 units, up 30 per cent compared with 2010. In Japan, the ratio of hybrid vehicles exceeded 45 per cent of all new Honda vehicle registrations in December 2011.
Honda currently sells seven hybrid models in approximately 50 countries, and is scheduled to begin sales of the ILX Hybrid, the first Acura hybrid, in the spring of 2012 in North America.
