Richmond Hill, Ontario – The Honda Civic and the Ford F-Series once again topped Canadian passenger car and light-duty truck sales for February, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers. Both lead the sales record by a wide margin and also hold the top spots for year-to-date (YTD) sales.
“What a great start to the year for many of the individual models being offered,” DesRosiers said. “Honda Civic up 95.5 per cent YTD, Pontiac G6 up 125.1 per cent YTD and the list goes on and on. Indeed, for the month of February, with one exception, every passenger car in the top ten grew by double digits for the month, and most are up double digits for the YTD. Light truck is not as bullish but quite interesting. Every one of the top five light trucks YTD are down, but every one of the second five best-selling light trucks are up double digit. I can’t explain why, but there is a lot of great new car and light truck product in the market and most are selling extremely well.”
DesRosiers noted that, as in January sales figures, import car models are less dominant than in the past, with General Motors having three models in the top ten. With light trucks, only the Honda CR-V made the top ten list, with all other models from Chrysler, Ford and General Motors.
“Also interesting is the degree to which entry level vehicles are growing, up 25.3 per cent for the month and 22.0 per cent YTD,” DesRosiers said. “Huge numbers and representing almost 50 per cent of the total market. The biggest growth (is) coming from B-sized subcompact cars, which were up 57.3 per cent for the month and 39.9 per cent for the year to date.”
The top ten best-selling car models in Canada in February 2008, in order, were the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cobalt, Toyota Yaris, Pontiac G5, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa and Chevrolet Impala.
