Richmond Hill, Ontario – The Honda Civic led Canadian passenger car sales in January, while the Dodge Caravan headed the light truck category, says industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers.
DesRosiers noted that while GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler had a difficult sales month in January compared to the overall market, the companies placed four cars and nine light trucks in the top ten.
“The other interesting aspect of this report is the huge numbers put on the board for fuel-efficient entry-level vehicles,” DesRosiers says. “Subcompact car up 31.7 per cent, compact car up 7.5 per cent, small pickup up 23.1 per cent, compact SUV up 24.9 per cent. All these should be viewed relative to the total market, which was up only 5.8 per cent. Canadians are embracing smaller fuel-efficient vehicles big time. This is a continuation of a longer-term trend.”
The top-selling passenger cars in Canada in January, in order, were the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cobalt, Toyota Camry, Toyota Yaris, Dodge Caliber, Pontiac Pursuit/G5, Ford Focus and Nissan Altima.
The top-selling light trucks, in order, were the Dodge Caravan, Ford F-Series pickup, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram, Ford Escape/Escape Hybrid, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Chevrolet Uplander, Honda CR-V and Pontiac Montana SV6.
