Richmond Hill, Ontario – The Honda Civic and Ford F-150 were at the top of the sales charts in October, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers.
“The Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra are in a two-way battle for the top-selling passenger car (for the year) while the Ford F-Series pickup truck has a lock on the top-selling light truck,” DesRosiers said. “The new Hyundai Elantra has been very successful, with sales up by 33.3 per cent this year, while the Honda Civic has seen sales decline by 12.4 per cent. The Honda Civic remains the number-one selling passenger for the month of October and (year-to-date) but by less than 3,000 units (year-to-date).
“Sales this year for Civic are 42,748 while Elantra sales are 40,051, a very tight battle. I doubt whether the Elantra can catch the Civic this year, especially since supply issues with the Civic are receding, but the simple fact that any vehicle has threatened the Civic is significant, since it has been the dominant passenger car in the market for well over a decade,” DesRosiers said.
DesRosiers also noted the emergence of three domestic vehicles on the top-ten passenger car list, and that entry-level cars have dominated sales in Canada with 644,771 units, or almost half the market.
DesRosiers noted that the F-Series is the best-selling vehicle of any type in Canada, but its sales are down by 3.6 per cent; the Dodge Ram is up by 17.2 per cent and the GMC Sierra by 2.9 per cent, while the Chevrolet Silverado is down by 4.1 per cent. The hottest segment is the compact SUV segment, with sales up by 24.6 per cent year-to-date; the weakest is small sports cars, down 10.0 per cent, with luxury sports cars down 7.7 per cent.
The top ten best-selling passenger cars in October, in order, were the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3, Chevrolet Cruze, Volkswagen Jetta, Hyundai Accent, Toyota Matrix, Ford Focus and Ford Fusion.
Year-to-date to the end of October, the top ten were the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze, Volkswagen Jetta, Ford Focus, Hyundai Accent, Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata.
The top ten best-selling light trucks in October, in order, were the Ford F-Series, Dodge Ram, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Escape, Dodge Caravan, Honda CR-V, Dodge Journey, Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota RAV4.
