Hino to introduce hybrid commercial truck in Australia

Toyota City, Japan – Toyota subsidiary Hino has announced it will introduce its diesel-electric Dutro Hybrid truck in Australia this month, according to a report by the Green Car Congress. It will mark the first hybrid from a Japanese truck maker outside of its home market.

Hino says it sees adequate demand for fuel-efficient trucks as tougher emission rules become the norm worldwide, even with the truck’s higher price. The Dutro Hybrid, first introduced in 2003 and redesigned last year, combines a 4.0-litre diesel engine with a 36 kW electric motor and NiMH battery pack. The new Dutro offers fuel consumption of about 10 L/100 km.

An Australia shipping firm is replacing its truck fleet with the Dutro Hybrid; Hino aims to sell about 100 units in Australia in its first year. It sold about 1,000 units in Japan last year.
