Government confirms federal bridges are safe
Ottawa, Ontario – Following the collapse of the Concorde underpass in Laval, Quebec in September, the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities has announced that all federal bridges within his portfolio have been inspected and confirmed that they are safe and secure for public use.
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon said that he requested that Crown corporations including the Blue Water Bridge Authority, the Federal Bridge Corporation Ltd., the National Capital Commission and the Peace Bridge Authority provide a synopsis of inspection practices and the current condition of federal bridges.
Federal bridge inspections are undertaken every year to every three years, depending on the size of the bridge, the complexity of the infrastructure and the traffic volume. Every year, bridge authorities perform visual inspections to make sure there is no visual anomaly. The Crown corporations listed are fully responsible for developing their own procedures for bridge improvements.
