San Diego, California – Pet safety advocacy group Bark Buckle UP has awarded the GMC Acadia with its Pet Safe Choice Award for 2009.
The Acadia was named for its standard third-row bench seating for restraining pets; ample room behind the seats for pet crates; tinted windows, tri-zone climate controls, and power-operated sunshade for comfort; OnStar and security technology; and insurance industry scores for crashworthiness. The group also noted its best-in-class fuel economy.
According to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association, 71.1 million U.S. householders own a pet, representing 63 per cent of all households.
“With so many pet owners travelling with their pets today, safety is key – not just for pets but for humans who travel with them – to making a conscientious purchase,” said Christina Selter, pet safety expert and founder of Bark Buckle UP. “We believe the GMC Acadia has earned high marks in this area for its outstanding leadership in car design and function.”
Selter said more pets travel than ever before, with an estimated 300 per cent jump in car travel from 2005, but that 98 per cent of pets ride unrestrained.
