GM truck wheels may be defective

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, has begun a preliminary investigation into a possible defect on certain steel wheels installed on General Motors full-sized pickup trucks and SUVs from model years 1999 through 2003.

The agency received a couple of complaints about cracked wheels leading to an air leak in the tires. The wheels involved are 16 inch by 6.5 inch in size installed on Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and GMC Sierra and Yukon models.

The safety agency will review the complaints before deciding whether to upgrade the investigation to an engineering analysis, or to drop the investigation.
