Four years behind their Dearborn rival, General Motors sees the benefits of lightweight trucks
Automotive News is reporting General Motors is working to develop an aluminum-bodied pickup set to go on sale in late 2018, citing a story from the Wall Street Journal who spoke to people close to its development.
GM has contracts in hand with the largest producers of aluminum – Alcoa and Novelis – who in turn are looking to increase aluminum sheet production to meet the demand.
However, the automaker is still mum on disclosing any details to the public.
“We are going to continue to improve the fuel efficiency of all of our products,” a GM spokesman said to AN. “For competitive reasons, we are not talking about technical details of future products at this point.”
On the 2015 Ford F-150, aluminum body panel usage has resulted in a weight savings of some 700 lbs.
