GEM introduces six-passenger electric vehicle

Detroit, Michigan – GEM, a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler, is showcasing its new six-passenger neighbourhood electric vehicle (NEV) at the Detroit and Los Angeles auto shows.

Like other cars in the line, the NEV uses a 72-volt DC motor powered by six twelve-volt gel batteries. The vehicles have a range of up to 48 km, with speeds of up to 40 km/h. A regenerative braking system helps to recharge the batteries.

DaimlerChrysler will start a cross-country promotional tour of the new line-up, beginning January 24 in San Diego. California is the largest market in the U.S. for neighbourhood electric vehicles.
