Fuel cell vehicles begin California coast rally

San Francisco, California – A group of seven fuel-cell powered vehicles left San Francisco on Wednesday for a three-day tour of the California coastline ending in Santa Barbara.

Organized by the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP), the “California Coast 2002 Road Rally” will demonstrate the capabilities and technology of fuel cell vehicles in a 500 km road rally.

Fuel cell vehicles from DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen will be represented, along with support from partners ChevronTexaco, Ballard Power Systems, UTC Fuel Cells, BP, ExxonMobil, and Shell Hydrogen, and 5 government agencies.

The California Fuel Cell Partnership stated says it is promoting fuel cell technology in an effort to lessen U.S. dependence on imported oil and help reduce auto-related emissions.
