Richmond Hill, Ontario – Ford’s sales dropped 0.5 per cent in December 2011 compared with December 2010, but its year-end total of 275,850 earned it the title of Canada’s top-selling brand in 2011, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers.

Ford took the title for the second year in a row, with sales for the year up 3.0 per cent. European brands all saw gains as well, DesRosiers said, adding that, “Rarely have all European brands seen an increase in sales in any calendar year. Just like how the 1990s were the decade for the Japanese, and how the first decade of this century belonged to the Koreans, three years in, this decade is shaping up to be for the European brands.”

Although with lower volume in December, Volkswagen won the mass market brand title with sales up 15.9 per cent on the year, DesRosiers said, while Chrysler was up 12.5 per cent. BMW beat out Mercedes-Benz for the number-one luxury vehicle seller, but with two exceptions, all Japanese brands saw their sales decline. The Korean brands also outperformed the market. Overall, the market was very soft, with December up 2.6 per cent, and the year-to-date sales up only 1.8 per cent.
