Sanya, China – Ford has continued the worldwide rollout of the new Fiesta, with its official Chinese launch on the southern resort island of Hainan.
China is the world’s first market to introduce the four-door sedan; it and the four-door hatchback are built at Changan Ford Mazda Automobile’s manufacturing facility in Nanjing for domestic sales. Production began at the plant on January 15, 2009.
The company said that demand has surpassed expectations, with several thousand Chinese consumers already placing orders, and more than 1.2 million people downloading Fiesta music from a popular Chinese web portal. The sedan was initially designed specifically with Chinese consumers in mind.
So far, customers have purchased more than 110,000 new Fiestas in the three continents where the car is on sale, including preliminary estimates from February results.
The Fiesta will be offered in North America as a hatchback and sedan, beginning in early 2010, with production at Cuautitlan, Mexico. It is also built in Cologne, Germany and Valencia, Spain for the European market, and will be produced at Auto Alliance Thailand next year.
