Trademark filings show Fiat 124 will return as Japanese-made coupe and roadster
Good news: we will get a Mazda MX-5 Coupe. It just won’t have a Mazda badge on it or a SkyActiv four-pot up front.
According to Allpar, the new MX-5 will officially respawn the Fiat 124. But, don’t worry, it won’t be the 124 sedan that the Russians used as a base for numerous Ladas. It’ll be a 124 Coupe and Roadster, much like the Pininfarina-styled Sport Spider of yore.
This is great news as even if Mazda decides not to build a coupe version of the fourth-generation MX-5, we will have at least one option from Fiat with a tin-top.
Also, for those pining for another Mazdaspeed MX-5, there will likely be an Abarth version of the new 124 Coupe and Roadster.
Let’s just hope the Italian offering is as pretty as the original. We will know more about the new model later this year.
