Stuttgart, Germany – The third-generation Smart Fortwo Electric Drive will be available in North America starting in September 2012. Along with sales that will commence in Europe in the spring of 2012, the electric Smart will be available in more than 30 markets worldwide.
Using a battery supplied for the first time by Deutsche Accumotive, the 55-kilowatt electric motor will surpass the 120 km/h mark, and accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in less than 13 seconds. The battery gives the car a range of about 140 km in city traffic.
The Smart Fortwo Electric was initially tested in a special fleet of 100 cars in London in 2007. The second-generation model was introduced in 18 markets in 2009, with the company gathering as much experience as possible about how customers use and charge electric vehicles.
As with the preceding model, the third-generation will be available as a coupe or cabriolet.
