Dunlop Tires to sponsor 6th North American Amateur Sumo Championship in Toronto
Toronto – As part of its ongoing quest for the unique, unusual and different, Dunlop Tires has announced its title sponsorship of the 6th North American Amateur Sumo Championship.
The championship, which has never been hosted in Canada before, will take place on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto. Champion amateur sumo wrestlers from across Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Jamaica and Japan will participate.
“Sumo wrestling has thrilled and fascinated people for over 2,000 years, yet it’s a sport that few Canadians have had an opportunity to witness first hand,” said Ian McIntosh, General Manager, Marketing & Advertising Service, Dunlop Tires (Canada). “The opportunity for Dunlop Tires to make our mark on the world stage of athletic competition via sumo wrestling was simply too fun to resist. Besides, hockey, football, baseball and basketball have already been done before.”
Those attending the event can expect to see sumo wrestlers competing in a variety of weight classes, including the ever-popular “open category” where there are no weight limits and the athletes can weigh as much as 500 pounds or more.
The Dunlop Tires 6th North American Amateur Sumo Championships is an official qualifying event for the world championships, to be held in Poland later this year.
