Drivers set one-day traffic record on Ontario’s 407 ETR highway
Toronto, Ontario – Ontario’s 407 ETR, an east-west toll road that runs just north of Toronto, set a new one-day traffic record of 423,434 trips on October 6, the Friday of the Thanksgiving long weekend. It beat the previous record of 413,687 trips set on June 30, 2005.
The highway is owned by a private consortium, which says it is the world’s first all-electronic, open-access toll highway. It runs for 108 km from the Queen Elizabeth Way at its west point to Highway 12 in Durham Region in the east; bills for tolls are determined by transponders in vehicles, or by cameras that photograph license plates as cars enter and exit the highway, and mailed to the vehicle’s owner.
