Toronto, Ontario – An illuminated “check engine” light doesn’t mean you need to pull over immediately, but it is important to get the vehicle checked out, according to Car Care Canada. When the light comes on, it means that a system such as the ignition, fuel injection or emission control is not operating at peak performance, even if the vehicle appears to be running normally.

The first thing to do is check the gas cap. If it is not replaced properly after refuelling, it can trigger the light.

If the light flashes, it is usually a sign of a more severe condition, and the car should be checked out right away.

When scheduling service, make sure the automotive shop performs OBDII On Board Diagnosis, which will provide a “trouble code” indicating why the light was activated.
