St. John’s, Newfoundland – A donated 1986 Porsche 944 will be raffled during the 2011 Targa Newfoundland road rally to raise funds for the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (ASNL).

The restored Porsche was donated by St. John’s resident Joe Butler, chief executive of Butler Enterprises and director of Metal World. It will be raffled as part of the ASNL’s second annual Targa Newfoundland fundraising drive.

“With my family, I have so enjoyed competing in Targa Newfoundland,” Butler said. “So when I found I could not compete in the tenth annual event due to business commitments, I still wanted to support the event and do something special. As the Autism Society is Targa’s charity partner, and as I have through the event become aware of the society’s needs for program funds, I decided that we would donate the Porsche to be used as a fundraiser for ASNL. I am delighted to be able to deliver it to such a worthwhile cause.”

Butler is a multi-year competitor in the rally and his daughter Melissa was his co-driver in 2007. He purchased the black Porsche in 2002 and restored it over a number of years.

ASNL will sell tickets at $10 each on the car, which will travel with the event towed on a trailer by the society’s event support vehicle. It will be placed on display at the nightly Targa car shows where raffle tickets will be available for purchase. The shows will be held in St. John’s at the ReMax Centre on September 10 and 11; at the Gander Community Centre on September 12 and 13; at the Clarenville Events Centre on September 14; and at the Marystown Arena on September 15. The Porsche will be on display in St. John’s at the rally finish at the Keg on Harbour Front Drive on September 16 and at the Holiday Inn on September 17. That night, the winning ticket will be drawn at the awards gala.
