Cut-rate Smart aimed at German buyers
Frankfurt, Germany – DaimlerChrysler will offer a cut-rate German version of its four-seater Smart ForFour, as part of a plan to expand the loss-making Smart brand’s product portfolio.
The limited-edition “ForFour Pure” will go on sale in Germany next week for 10,990 euros, including value-added tax. The price is 2,000 euros less than the cheapest model now available, and the deal will last for six months.
The new model will be shown at the upcoming Geneva car show, along with tuned-up versions of the ForFour, roadster, and roadster coupe models.
The model is part of a strategic review for Smart, which has not made a profit since the car made its debut in 1998. The company has also frozen development of the ForMore, an SUV version that was supposed to be the company’s entry into the U.S. market.
