Construction begins on widening of Highway 401 near Windsor, Ontario
Windsor, Ontario – Representatives of the federal and provincial governments have announced the start of construction to widen Highway 401 near Windsor, Ontario. The highway is a direct link to Toronto from the U.S. border crossing at Windsor and Detroit, Michigan.
The construction is the fourth phase of a five-phase project; together, the five phases will widen 46 km of the highway to six lanes from Windsor to Tilbury, in Essex County. The latest phase will include highway widening, bridge replacements, the rehabilitation of five underpass structures, installation of a concrete median barrier, and upgrade to high-mast lighting.
The two governments are investing a combined total of $325 million to the fourth phase. The first and second phases of the project are now complete, with the third phase expected to be finished later this fall.
