Detroit, Michigan – The Chevrolet Volt is the first electric vehicle to earn a five-star overall vehicle score for safety from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA).

The Volt was also named a Top Safety Pick by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Starting with 2011 models, NHTSA has introduced tougher tests and more rigorous requirements for the five-star rating, which include a new side pole test that simulates a crash into a pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the A pillar on the driver’s side.
