Toronto, Ontario – The Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) and its TCA-Quebec Social Justice Fund have donated $50,000 to Oxfam-Quebec’s relief efforts in response to the four recent storms that have hit Haiti.

The TCA-Quebec, which represents a number of members of Haitian descent, is joined by other Federation des travailleurs et travailleuses du Quebec (Quebec Federation of Labour) affiliates in donating to the relief effort. As of September 12, Oxfam-Quebec had delivered its first shipment of humanitarian aid, which was transported by boat as road access is still impossible.

Of Haiti’s 8.7 million population, an estimated one million are now homeless as a result of the storms; over 8,000 have been forced into temporary shelters and the reported death toll is more than 500. Some towns have been completely devasted; so far, 11,000 homes have been destroyed and 35,000 are damaged. It is estimated that between two and three million people could face starvation.

The CAW Social Justice Fund has also made a donation of $25,000 to Oxfam Canada for its relief efforts in storm-ravaged Cuba.
