CAW-TCA Canada and Ford partner to present Yousuf Karsh collection
Windsor, Ontario – The Art Gallery of Windsor (AGW) in Ontario has announced a partnership with the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW-TCA Canada), which has become the national tour sponsor of Yousuf Karsh: Industrial Images. The exhibition features over 80 photographs by Karsh; the majority were borrowed from the private collection of the Ford Motor Company of Canada.
The show emphasizes Karsh’s industrial works, rather than his better-known portraits of famous individuals, and represents the first time since 1951 that all of the Ford of Canada images have been presented together. The exhibition recently opened at the Confederation Arts Centre in Charlottetown, PEI, and will tour through 2009.
Karsh visited Ford in Windsor in 1951 to photograph the men employed on the assembly line, in the foundry, and at the trade school; he was commissioned by Ford to take photographs for its annual report.
The show also includes images of workers at Atlas Steel in Welland, Ontario, and Sharon Steel in Pennsylvania. The exhibition will be supported by a coffee-table book featuring images from the exhibition.
