CAW donates $142,000 to Canadian food banks
Toronto, Ontario – The Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) has announced it is contributing $142,000 to food banks across Canada. The money will be provided to 42 food banks ranging from Newfoundland to British Columbia.
CAW president Buzz Hargrove says that the union responds at this time each year to help people in need, as part of its commitment to social unionism; in addition to the major donation from the CAW-Social Justice Fund and CAW Council, many CAW locals do additional work and provide assistance to food banks in their communities.
The CAW says that according to Hunger Count 2005, more than 800,000 people use a food bank on average each month; 13.1 per cent of food bank users are people with jobs, and 39 per cent of food banks struggle to meet demands.
