Of the winners on the list, the 3 Series, Corvette, Chrysler 300, Accord, MX-5 and Porsche Boxster carried over from the 2006 10 Best list. During the 25-year history of the awards, imports have accounted for more than 50 per cent of the winners, and had especially strong showings from 2000 until 2004, when they accounted for eight of the ten awards.
The winners are determined by a panel of twelve Car and Driver editors, who rate them on a scale of one to 100 with a focus on functional performance, driving satisfaction and value. Vehicles considered for the award must be available in the U.S. by January 2007, and must be priced below a cap of US$70,000, or 2.5 times the average transaction price as of summer 2006. In addition, manufacturers must provide a vehicle for testing.
