Canadian engineer builds solar-powered Prius
Sydenham, Ontario – Having already designed his house for maximum fuel savings and energy efficiency, engineer Steve Lapp has built a prototype “Photovoltaic Prius”, a 2001 Toyota Prius equipped with rooftop solar panels and an additional battery system to supplement the charge in the vehicle’s original-equipment batteries.
Although the vehicle is still a rough prototype, he has achieve an initial ten per cent fuel efficiency, from 4.5L/100km to 4.0L/100km. Lapp estimates that if he drives 24 km on a sunny day, it could reduce the gasoline consumption by 33 per cent, to 3.3L/100km.
