Toronto, Ontario – The Khiroya family of Calgary, Alberta has won the Smarter Driver Challenge in Toronto while driving a 2012 Toyota Camry.

The event, sponsored by Shell Canada and Canadian Geographic, is the second of two “mini-challenges” held as part of the three-month Energy Diet Challenge. The overall competition is designed to encourage Canadians to use energy and water more efficiency in their homes, and to make smarter mobility and transportation choices.

Six families worked with John and Helen Taylor, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s most fuel-efficient driving couple, at Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto to learn smarter driving techniques.

Shell attached a device to the on-board diagnostic computers of each Camry to measure driver performance in fuel consumption and also four key performance areas related to fuel efficiency: idling, engine over-revving, harsh acceleration and harsh braking. The competitors were evaluated on fuel consumption, key performance results, and accuracy of answering related skill-testing questions.
