Quebec City, Quebec – CAA-Quebec is reminding motorists of the new Quebec law, now in effect, which requires the mandatory use of winter tires between December 15 and March 15. The law also includes a provision for travellers leaving Quebec during the mandatory time period to obtain an exemption certificate.

The certificate is issued by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and its agents, which include CAA-Quebec’s nine vehicle registration centres. The certificate is free and is valid for seven days.

The certificate is intended to meet the needs of motorists such as those who purchase a vehicle and need to shop for winter tires, or those who are driving to southern climates. If travellers know their departure and return dates, they can obtain two certificates at the same time. A maximum of four certificates can be issued for the same vehicle during the period in question.

The requirement to equip vehicles with winter tires was introduced as part of Bill 42, adopted in December 2007. For more information on the law, visit CAA-Quebec.
