Other engines – V8 and V6 – were considered before making decision to go hybrid
The latest batch of greener supercars are a welcomed sight. But, we can’t help but wonder what many of these low-weight models would be like with traditional internal combustion engines and high amounts of horsepower.
Speaking to De Telegraaf’s Autovisie, BMW engineers let it slip a V10 engine was initially considering for the BMW i8 supercar. The idea was quickly shelved in favour of V8 and V6 options. That is before the decision to make the car a dedicated hybrid was set in stone. With a hybrid drivetrain, the two larger engines were also shelved due to cooling problems.
The BMW i8 will arrive with a 1.5L TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine and an electric motor producing a combined 362 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, good for a 4.4 second sprint to 100 km/h and 2.5L/100km average consumption.
