Munich, Germany – Five years after the introduction of the BMW X3 compact SUV, the company has built its 500,000th unit. The milestone vehicle, built in Graz, Austria by BMW Group production associates Magna Steyr, will be donated to assist earthquake victims in the Chinese province of Sichuan.

In September, the X3 will be auctioned off following the Destination XTour 2008 in China, with all proceeds going to the China Charity Organization and the BMW WarmHeart Fund.

More than 110,000 X3 models were sold worldwide in 2007 alone; international demand resulted in the Austria production being augmented by three “completely knocked down assembly” locations, in Egypt, Russia and Thailand. In Europe, six engine variants are available, three in gasoline and three in diesel; the milestone vehicle is a straight six gasoline model.
