Ludwigshafen, Germany – Chemical company BASF is creating a new global business unit that will amalgamate its current and future battery business for electric vehicles.

The unit, named Battery Materials, will be formed January 1, 2012 and will integrate BASF’s catalysts division, which focuses on cathode materials development; its intermediates division for electrolyte formulations; and BASF Future Business GmbH, focused on next-generation lithium-ion battery opportunities.

Over the next five years, BASF will invest hundreds of millions of Euros in researching, developing and producing battery materials. In addition to lithium-ion, the company is also researching future concepts such as lithium-sulfur and lithium-air.
